SPCA marks International Live Export Awareness Day

14 June 2025

We urge the Government to rethink its election promise to reintroduce the live export of livestock by sea – which would be an unprecedented leap backwards for animal welfare.

SPCA marks International Live Export Awareness Day

Our work continues behind the scenes

You may not have heard much from us on this topic lately – though in this case, no news is good news. An extended delay to the government’s plans to repeal the ban on live export by sea is welcomed by SPCA. However, our work behind the scenes is never done as we maintain consistent pressure on the Government to rethink their impending decision. Read on to see what we're up to, and find out how you can support this work.

Writing to all Members of Parliament

This week, SPCA has written to every Member of Parliament across all three coalition parties to urge them to rethink the coalition agreement to reintroduce live exports.

Read our letter to the Prime Minister here.

With an election year ahead, it’s more important than ever that we ensure that live export by sea is a thing of the past. Standing by the ban sends a clear message about the kind of country we want New Zealand to be: one where compassion and scientific evidence guide policy, and where our reputation for humane, ethical farming remains intact.

New postcards – get yours at participating Op Shops

We want to help you contact the Government too, and we love to use methods other than the usual email option. We’re excited to have limited edition postcards available at participating SPCA Op Shops and Centres. Keep an eye out for these postcards, which you can fill in with your feedback on live export and send to the Prime Minister free of charge.

Preparing for public consultation

While we welcome the delay to introducing live export by sea, the Government has repeatedly confirmed that they intend to reintroduce the trade, and they have committed to a public consultation on the matter.

We are working hard to make sure that, when consultation is launched, it will be easy for you to have your say. Keep an eye on our social media channels and sign up for our monthly updates (by scrolling to the bottom of this page!) so that you can hear more when consultation opens.

In the meantime, you can use our template to write to the Prime Minister. Take action now.
